Kylie Cosmetics - Is the Bronze Palette Worth The Hype?

Kylie Cosmetics - Is the Bronze Palette Worth The Hype?

It's always such a gamble when a celebrity chooses to create their own fashion/beauty line or collaboration. You can tell some are completely hands on with the design process, and you can tell those who are just after a fast buck, those who would never in a million years wear the designs they choose to brand up.

Now having followed Kylie Jenner on Snapchat for a while now, a channel through which she documents a lot of the process behind Kylie Cosmetics, it seems pretty apparent that she is very much involved in the development of her own beauty empire.

Of course as soon as the Lip Kits launched it was nigh on impossible to actually buy one. For real. They sold out in absolutely no time at all, we're talking mere seconds and minutes here, so it was a while before I finally managed to get my hands on one (well, two...). Those first two I purchased were Candy K and Dolce K, easy to wear shades which you could use day or night, and which stayed put for hours, and I mean hours. The texture was incredible, I was actually a bit surprised just how good they were.

Based upon this I bought a few more colours, however to be completely honest, a few of the other shades do seem to have a different composition than those first two colours, as these don't seem to stay put nearly as long as Candy or Dolce. Leo in particular seems to be a bit patchy on me, and doesn't stay put anywhere near as long unfortunately. Despite this, I'm still fully on board with the brand, and they remain some of the best lip colours I've ever used.

So when Kylie teased her very first eyeshadow palette, the Bronze Palette, on Snapchat I was instantly intrigued. The colours were beautiful, I'm a big fan of burnt browns and oranges as they bring out blue/green eyes so well. It was after this that I decided to treat myself and see if the shadows matched the quality of the Lip Kits.

I wasn't disappointed. The Bronze Palette is amazing quality, the shadows are super pigmented, gliding on so smoothly for even coverage which lasts all day. These shadows easily match the quality of higher end brands, and are actually pretty well priced for the number of shades you get in here. Teamed with Candy or Dolce these shadows make for the perfect sultry, smoky look which Miss Kylie Jenner so often favours herself. All in all? I wouldn't hesitate for a minute to recommend the Bronze Palette, even though Royal Mail will more than likely rob you blind with customs charges if you live in the UK, this palette is more than worth the super hype surrounding it. Kudos Kylie...

Chinese Single's Day and Cartier

Chinese Single's Day and Cartier

How many members of the general public in England know about Chinese Single's Day? Taking a stab in the dark, I'm going to guess not many, and I don't blame you. If I didn't work in the industry I do, which is Affiliate Marketing, I wouldn't have a clue what it was either.

However in 2015, Chinese Single's Day surpassed Black Friday in regards to revenue generated through online shopping in China. In 2016, Chinese shoppers spent £14.2 billion in 24 hours. Now if that's not a pretty mammoth statistic I don't know what is. Bearing this in mind, it does make it even more surprising how this monumental online event still flies relatively under the radar in the minds of most.

So what is Chinese Single's Day exactly? Well the premise behind it is actually pretty cool, and one I can totally get behind. Chinese Single's Day is an 'anti-Valentine's Day' if you will, an occasion when the Chinese youth of today celebrate being single by treating themselves to new clothes, killer beauty products and beautiful luxury items. I told you, pretty cool huh? Even the very date, November 11th, or 11.11, reflects being single (with each '1' standing alone within the date).

Now it was clear to me that 2016 was the year which attempted to bring Chinese Single's Day slightly more into the Western world, which makes sense seeing as how hard we embrace the likes of Cyber Weekend and seasonal sales etc. This was evident in the number of British and American brands who ran heavily discounted promotions through the likes of Weibo (basically China's very own version of Twitter). With a little bit of tricksy navigation, and Google Translate of course, these offers could be reached, and taken advantage of, by anyone at all. This is the beauty of the event, not only does it cater to those residing in China, but also the significant Chinese population in the likes of the UK, USA and AUS, effectively meaning these offers were present on the British/American/Australian versions of websites such as Benefit Cosmetics, Charlotte Tilbury, Apple, Sony and Victoria's Secret, to name but a few.

Alongside Cyber Weekend, it goes without saying that if you want the biggest discount available on the market, the best time to shop is most definitely Chinese Single's Day. It was with this in mind, that I was reading through various Weibo feeds, searching for deals on products I had been keeping my eye on, or those which were very rarely discounted, such as M.A.C Cosmetics for example. After scrolling through, I spotted 11% off all orders over £250 on Vestiaire Collective

Vestiaire Collective, for those who haven't heard of the site before, is effectively a premium version of eBay. Private sellers can sell their luxury fashion goods to a discerning audience, and buyers can be assured in the authenticity and quality of each product they purchase, with each item undergoing rigorous authenticity checks before being released to the seller. If these tests are not passed, the seller receives a full refund, no questions asked.

So it was on this day, that I decided it was now or never when it came to making a purchase I had been considering for a while now - a Cartier LOVE ring. Whilst searching through Vestiaire, I found the perfect white gold version, in my size, to match my watch (which you can read more about here), which came complete with original Cartier ring box. I thought hard about it all weekend, and eventually made the purchase during Chinese Single's Day Weekend, taking full advantage of the relevant discount on offer. This really was the best time to purchase, as I noticed that Vestiaire Collective actually ran a slightly reduced discount during their Cyber Weekend promotion, more than likely due to the latter being more widely available across the internet to a larger audience.

My ring arrived a couple of weeks later, with a full authentication statement in its original little red and gold box, adorned with the cursive Cartier logo. Like its turquoise Tiffany's counterpart, the best things really do come in small packages...

When planning for my trip to Las Vegas in September I came to realise I had a little bit of a problem on my hands. When considering luggage/outfits etc initially, I had planned on taking my Givenchy Antigona with me as hand luggage, spacious enough to fit all my plane essentials, and classic enough to go with pretty much any outfit.

However after researching the average temperatures in Vegas during mid-September, I quickly had second thoughts. As much as I love my Antigona, I didn't want to be carrying around a heavy leather bag in 28 degree desert heat. I'd been looking for the perfect rucksack for quite some time, having first seen a beautiful Gucci whilst on holiday in Cannes last year, and so decided to finally purchase one ahead of my trip, the ideal bag when you want to be hands free in sweltering heat.

I wanted one which was big enough to use on the flight, but not so big that I would get sick of carrying it around everyday. I wanted one which would suit my style and that I would be able to use season through season for years to come. I didn't mind paying a bit more for one which I loved, and so started looking at pre-owned and vintage designer versions on Ebay. I looked at Gucci, Moschino and Prada before finally settling on a Louis Vuitton Montsouris MM backpack.

Louis Vuitton Backpack - Aldo Keychain

Some of the best stores on Ebay for pre-owned designer bags are Japanese, and I purchased mine from Next-Innovation, an Ebay store with a vast array of Louis Vuitton, Dior and Chanel. They list each item with a thorough description and rating system, describing each piece inside and out. They take photographs of every single angle of each bag, noting any scuffs or scrapes, which are obviously somewhat expected from vintage items, but overall the quality of these bags is amazing for the price. They also provide authenticity checks on every single item, and have a registered legal license with the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Dept. so you can rest assured these are the real deal.

The only downside to purchasing from them is that you are responsible for the customs charges upon delivery, so until it arrives you're not too sure on the exact total it'll cost you, of course you can probably work this out as an approximate value based on the average percentage custom rate however.

My little MM rucksack cost me £370.00 in total including customs charges. Louis Vuitton actually don't make this style anymore, the closest is probably the Bosphore Backpack, which is currently retailing at £1,370.00. By purchasing from companies like Next-Innovation, it makes it so much easier to afford that designer bag you've been eyeing up...

The Fragrant Favourites

Although I have a few different key fragrances on rotation, I wouldn't exactly say I have a 'signature scent'. Probably because I'm quite fickle when it comes to perfume, I like to change it up according to my mood or look on any given day.

Some days I crave the beachy top notes of Coconut Passion by Victoria's Secret, which, true to its name, is a playful combination of vanilla and coconut, and some days I prefer something more refined. Which brings me to my two main scents, ones I always go back to and which smell just as beautiful now as they did upon that very first spray.

Alien by Thierry Mugler

Probably my absolute favourite. It's one of the most distinctive fragrances out there in my opinion, with people frequently commenting or, if they've smelt it before, correctly guessing just what it is you're wearing, it's that much of a unique composition. Which is one of the things I love most about it.

Launched back in 2009, it has a pure, ageless quality to it, with top notes of Mandarin Essense, heart notes, or mid-notes, of Morrocan Jasmine, and base notes comprised of White Amber and Cashmeran Wood. Usually I'm not one for deep, musky fragrance, however the floral elements of this one prevent it from appearing too intense, and results in an enduring, appealing fragrance which lasts the entire day.

Personally I favour the parfum version over the eau de toilette, purely due to its longevity. I know perfumes do tend to cost more than the eau de toilette version, but in my opinion it's more than worth it, as it lasts a lot longer and you tend to use a lot less. I also spotted an Alien candle whilst in Debenhams the other day, which might just be going on my Christmas wishlist...

Flowerbomb by Viktor & Rolf

I'd loved Flowerbomb for years before I finally decided to actually purchase a bottle. It was one of those fragrances that I always used to spritz when walking through the perfume hall, and so when I was in Las Vegas in September and spotted this in a beauty outlet for a ridiculously good price, I knew I had to treat myself.

This was a limited edition version of the perfume, complete with glitter bottle, and came in a special Viktor & Rolf gift box. The most beautifully feminine fragrance, it's little wonder just why this has come to be such a cult scent. The top notes are an amalgamation of soft floral elements, comprised of Mandarin, Bergamot, Pink Pepper and Saffron, rounded off with Amber, Vanilla, Patchouli and Oud to add a delightful warm depth. As with Alien, this one isn't particularly cheap, however again, one little spray goes a long way, and it's definitely worth indulging in when it comes to birthdays or Christmas...

Investment Pieces - The Watch

As of next month, I'll be out of my current age box, the 18-25 one, and into the next. The next one being that bit closer to 30. Thirty. Years. Old.

Although I don't feel anywhere near to being 30 mentally (or at least on the way to), one thing that has changed as I'm getting older is the way I buy. Like any girl who has a strong interest in fashion and trends, I used to be guilty of purchasing an inordinate number of clothes and accessories from the high street which reflected these ever-changing seasonal trends. Don't get me wrong, the high street is just the place to do this, letting you test the waters with trend-lead pieces easily and affordably. However it inevitably got to the point where I came to realise just how much I was spending on these items, items I wore once or twice and were of mixed quality.

It was from this view point that moving forward I decided to focus on quality over quantity. Of course I'd still buy the odd trend piece at a killer price, I'd never stop altogether, however I have reassessed just how much I do this. Having worked for a fast-paced online retailer for two years, it was all too easy to buy too much. So much in fact, that I didn't have space to actually store any more. And so from here, I slowly started to get rid of the pieces that I never have/never will wear, either eBaying or taking to the charity shop in order to free up some of my wardrobe space. I also realised that yes, many of the items were cheap to buy, however when buying these in bulk? Not so much. I was spending too much on items which, effectively, didn't last. So I decided to buy fewer, better quality things, whether this was in regards to beauty products, jewellery or accessories. Things that, although would ultimately cost me more upfront, would last far, far longer, and therefore actually make better financial sense.

So taking this into account I'm going to write a mini blog series on my investment pieces so far, starting with my favourite, my watch.

A good quality watch is probably one of the best, if not the best, accessory you can purchase. This is something you'll be wearing everyday, and, if crafted to a high standard, can last you your whole life. Whilst I completely appreciate that a Rolex or an Omega for example aren't always an option, by saving up that little bit more and buying from a reputable brand, you'll be more than likely saving money in the long run. Swiss brands are always an excellent choice, and my first proper watch I got was actually from Tissot for my graduation gift, costing around £150. It had a lightweight, stainless steel bracelet strap, with a dark, charcoal grey face, classic. I never had any trouble with it, and it went with every outfit and every occasion. Swiss watches are often impeccably made, with excellent craftsmanship going into them.

I researched Rolex models for months before choosing which one to purchase. I looked at face colours, different strap compositions and varying metals. After looking at a number of styles, I decided that I wanted to stick with monochrome, preferably a black face, with a jubilee strap.

It was here that I came into some difficulty in my search. I looked far and wide and couldn't find one anywhere. They were either ladies, and consequently the face was minuscule, or they were years and years old. As I was looking to buy pre-owned, it was imperative that it came complete with original packaging and authenticity papers. After having no luck whatsoever online, it was then that I decided to go search the stores which I knew sold pre-owned Rolex in Newcastle. As my mum works in the jewellery industry, and has a great knowledge of luxury watches, she was a fantastic help in the search, informing me of where best to look and trustworthy retailers which stocked a good selection. It was because of this that I ended up looking in Market Cross Jewellers in the Metrocentre. It was here that I managed to find just what I was looking for. A Rolex DateJust with a black face and a jubilee strap, complete with original wooden box and authenticity papers. Dated as 1997, it was in impeccable condition, and had clearly not been worn a great deal. The ladies in the store could not have been more helpful, and made the whole purchasing experience a fantastic one.

It's by far my favourite thing I own, and I'm happy to say that I've worn it every single day without fail since buying it, meaning it's cost per wear is next to nothing. I've had so many compliments on it, and I love it just as much now as I did when I first spotted it in the window. I know I'll still be wearing it happily for quite a few years to come...

The Search For The Perfect Flat

The Search For The Perfect Flat

Read post
The hunt for a good flat is, more often than not, always a stressful one. A combination of racing from viewing to viewing, attempting to hide your obvious disdain when entering a flat which is the most rancid thing you've ever seen, and fighting off fierce competition from other hunters.

It's safe to say my most recent flat search was the epitome of the above. We found a house we absolutely loved, in a good area, within our price range and consequently rang to place a deposit whilst standing outside after our viewing. Having been empty for two weeks, we thought this was more or less a certain, and it was just up to us to put our deposit down. As it transpired, we had just been beaten that very morning, by another viewing prior to ours.

So the search continued, we saw flats which were so small you couldn't swing a cat, flats with broken windows leaving you open to the elements, and flats which came complete with what can only be described as prison bathrooms. But it was after this initial blow, that we stumbled upon a flat which almost looked too good to be true. We didn't get our hopes up however, as the viewing was arranged as a group one, which in most cases means you'll be partaking in some kind of bidding war in regards to rent in order to win it.

So we left one viewing, and decided to head over to the group viewing early. As we were standing outside, the estate agent met us, and decided to let us in prior to the rest of the group arriving. As we looked around, it was evident that this flat was a little dream. Even better than the photos, which almost never happens, it was housed inside an old converted tobacco factory, with a bright atrium and hotel style corridors. Everything about it was perfect, and above all it felt like a little home from the start. After approximately 50 seconds, we decided to take it there and then, so decided to phone the agency to place a deposit, just as the doorbell rang and the other viewers came through the door. In the nick of time, it was ours. I couldn't love it any more, and after scrolling through Pinterest and adding our own touches to the place, it's the perfect little home in the city...

How To Be An Office-Appropriate Hallowqueen...

How To Be An Office-Appropriate Hallowqueen...

"In girl world, Halloween is the one night a year when a girl can dress like a total slut and no other girls can say anything about it."
Cady Heron

Halloween isn't known as one of the easiest occasions to dress for in the office, however it's actually surprisingly easy to give a nod to the holiday without going whole hog, or, to quote Mean Girls, without looking like a total slut (let's face it, no one wants to be that gal).

Cue me donning a 'Creepin' it real' t-shirt, the perfect combo of Halloween meets gangster, paired with the darkest beauty shades I could find in my stash, resulting in total goth vibes. Although office-appropriate goth vibes I hasten to add...

Now Halloween or no, Haux by M.A.C is one of my absolute favourite shadows. Labelled as one of their Satin hues, it's actually more matte, and is super easy to blend out, giving you a soft smokey eye which is ideal for daytime, or, when layered with a heavy liner, makes for the perfect party eye.

As I was pairing this with a pretty bold lip, I skipped the eyeliner and just wore this with a single layer of mascara on my top and bottom lashes, The shade is ideal for those with blue/green eyes by the way, as its red undertones and overall plum shade place it on the opposite side of the colour wheel, bringing out your eyes' natural colour by utilising contrasting hues. See? Method behind the madness.

So to really make the most of Halloween and go super bold, I paired Haux with a burgundy berry lip, courtesy of Collection 2000. Who said you have to pay a fortune for great lip colours? This is actually one of the best dark shades I've found, a true burgundy which doesn't dry your lips out if you're it wearing it all day. To help keep it in place, I teamed it with the Leo Lip Liner from Kylie Cosmetics

Now, I could've achieved this whole lip using just the Leo Lip Kit, however, to tell you the truth, I'm not a fan of the actual Leo Matte Lipstick. The colour is amazing yes, however, in my opinion, it's actually one of Kylie's weakest Lip Kits in regards to longevity for some reason, as I find it just does not weigh up to the staying power of the likes of Candy K or Dolce K unfortunately. However the birthday packaging it came in was pretty killer, so I'll forgive her this one time.

And there it is, how to be a professional yet sassy Hallowqueen, without having to go HAM on the costume front...
